Avian Flu UPDATE: June 2004

A one-page advertisement, updating the avian flu situation in B.C.'s Lower Mainland, from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, containing the following information ran in Vancouver-area newspapers on June 19, 2004:

Avian Influenza Movement Controls

The avian influenza response is now entering the recovery phase.  As a precaution, modified movement controls on birds and bird products are in effect.

Within the Control Area, the City of Abbotsford has been declared a High-Risk Region.  The City of Abbotsford is bordered on the North by the Fraser Rive, on the Sough by the US border, on the East at the Vedder Canal and to the West at 276th Street.

High-Risk Region Movement Controls

·  No show birds, zoo birds, backyard and commercial birds not for slaughter may be moved into or out of the High Risk Region.

· Pet birds may be moved into and within the High Risk Region under certain restrictions.

· Hatchlings may be moved out of the High-Risk Region for placement in the Control Area only. 

·  Hatching eggs may be moved into the High Risk Region, under general permit, and set in approval hatcheries only.

Control Area Movement Controls 

·  Live birds may be moved into and within the Control Area. Movement out of the Control Area is prohibited.

·  Hatching eggs may be moved into the Control Area, including the High Risk Region. Movement into BC is permitted under certain restrictions. Movement outside of BC is prohibited. 

·  Poultry products, such as meat, may be moved within the Control Area, including the High Risk Region. Movement out of the Control Area is permitted under certain restrictions.
