In March, 2004, several cases of avian flu showed up at a poultry farm in Abbotsford, B.C. This resulted in the usual overreaction and panic by both the government and the general populace, as rumors and incomplete information flooded out through the media as well as through general gossip. Anyone with a pet bird was affected, as suddenly pet birds also became at risk for both catching the disease and becoming part of a cull of all birds. As of May 25, 2004 (the date this page was posted), birds of any kind could not be taken into or out of B.C.'s Lower Mainland region. The strain of avian flu that currently exists in the lower mainland is not fatal to humans. IT IS A DIFFERENT STRAIN than that which killed some people in Asia. In an effort to eliminate some of the rumors and misinformation flying around, here is a link to a site that provides up-to-date information about this disease. Avian Influenza, by Dr. Margaret Wissman D.V.M., D.A.B.V.P (as presented at the 2004 Canada West Parrot Symposium)
